Medial/Lateral (ML) and Flexion/Hyperextension (FH)

The Team You Kneed created a combination Medial/Lateral (ML) and Flexion/Hyperextension (FH) knee orthotics surrogate. The design is made up of both a knee surrogate and a frame that allows testing in two motions. This makes the design more efficient as well as saving the company money. The lightweight aluminum core supports the hinge resembling the knee. The leg mold can be rotated 90° and fastened to the core to change the direction of movement. The core is attached to a spring, which provides a force that simulates a knee injury. Housing the entire surrogate is a frame consisting of T-slot aluminum, linear rods, and bushings to guide the surrogate as it moves. Overall, our surrogate helps test orthotic devices accurately and efficiently by recreating the forces sustained during injury for both the ML and FH directions.

Anterior/Posterior (AP)

The Team You Kneed also created a surrogate to test the Anterior/Posterior (AP) displacement of the knee. The frame is composed of T-slot aluminum, linear rails and carriages, and bearings which create a hinge. The aluminum core of the surrogate is encased by 3D print and wrapped in a half inch of silicone, resembling the muscle tissue and skin of a real leg. The entire leg hinges upwards to allow for easier changing of orthotics like step on braces. The ankle rests within a crossbar between the linear rails, allowing for controlled displacement between the applied forces and the spring. The test is conducted by measuring displacement at the knee when the force is applied, thus simulating a person changing directions or coming to an abrupt stop. This simulation of injury allows testing engineers to test the efficacy of their braces objectively, through data alone.
